If my child said this I would take them to a counsellor so that they may speak without judgement to an independent party. An emo phase should be more cringe and amusing to a parent.

Mmmmm, emo boys were a lot more gentle and introspective when I was in college but there was definitely a delineation of before and after emo made it onto MTV. When I was in college this was more of the nu metal vibe.

My niece is dabbling in Goth stuff and we're all just like buying stuff for her birthday and super supportive. It's kind of a fun shift
