The audio quality is going to lead to a 10th
It’s because of events like this that I object in principle to adventure tourism. You get injured and other people risk their life to come rescue you. It’s unbridled narcissism.
I was at Zion and we went up to Angel's Landing (if i recall), and hiked farther up. We weren't going far at all, but we nrought some things. We had water, good boots and clothes, pocket knives, compact high calorie food and just a few other things. It was spring and about 70 down in the campground, but it was maybe upper 50's up top in the shade and we found snow-covered boulder fall. Deep snow with no way of telling what was underneath, and it was also cooling down the area quite a bit, sort of like a fridge. We turned back because that's bad fucking the news.
Less than 5 minutes later a bunch of college kids wearing shorts, some in hiking sandals, no water, no nothing. We warned them that it got colder, made strong warnings about the snow/boulderfall, and that was that. They kept on going. We were 30-40 minutes off the trail area, but at least it was a pretty clear route back regardless. They would probably be fine, but that's far enough that you are in some really harsh wilderness already. It might not be easy to get to you quickly of you get hurt or stuck. There are freakin' mountain lions! If you go a little farther and somehow get disoriented, that could be it. It was just above freezing at night down at the campground, and it's colder up top. People are are fucking stupid.
This is a Monty Python skit
crazy that 1 person's neglect killed 8 others. Stories that happen more often than you think
