The issue is that once you put an infinity on one side of a moral argument, anything on the other side of the argument becomes justified. In this case, human civilization is a one-shot affair, if we fall back down the tech ladder we're not getting back up. The Earth doesn't have the resources to sustain the current level of consumption, let alone the consumption levels of an entire planet looking to improve their standard of living. We've already morally bankrupted ourselves; the only difference is the level where they draw the line.

A subreddit's name becoming a misnomer is a classic digital 'desire path,' where user behavior carves out the space's actual function.

This comes down to a decades old "de-pop" conspiracy theory that suggested the elites would fabricate some global disaster that would reduce the world population by 90%.

The elites would be protected from this disaster and emerge as the saviours for the remaining population and, in their benevolence, give the remaining humans the grace of becoming their servants.

It's a kooky old conspiracy theory, but now it seems the tools are coming in to place for such a scheme.

It's a cautionary tale as old as science-fiction, but I'm still in favour of a more equitable distribution of wealth. There is no justifiable reason for the existence of a gold-plated Mercedes or a 3 million dollar watch. That's an obscenity as long as we still use actual currency as a means of transaction for basic survival. Keep nothing in your life that is not either practical or beautiful. Everything beyond that is meaningless.
