He is right. When I was a nursing student in Australia, one of our placements was with the mental health community team that worked with the homeless & then another team that worked with people with homes... the differences is amazing.

Some of the ex-homeless people were lucky & had some relative that gave them a good inheritance where they can purchase a house, some had government support, & some had to work their butt off from 0 to having a place to live that they can call home... & the difference it makes to their mental health issues, physical health & overall well-being is astronomical.

Yes, they may still have schizophrenia, but it can be managed & they live normal lives compared to when they were homeless. A lot of them also got off drugs & alcohol.

I watched a video on the political incentive to maintain artificial scarcity in the housing market. The core point went like this:

In western nations, homes are now seen as investments, despite not producing anything or doing anything that causes their inherent value to increase. Middle aged people and older often have most of their wealth tied up in their house, and expect that their house will be a major contributor to their retirement plan and whatever inheritance they will have to pass on. And because this is also the demographic that typically has the highest voter turnout, politicians refuse to take action that would cause housing prices to fall and put barriers in the way of new high density housing construction.

Totally. Homeless should be housed. If they dont want to live by basic rules that we all live by, then we still house them, for their health and safety in supervised housing. If they have a mental illness or addiction we house themin a way that protects themselves and others. We all agree.

I am not here to argue that people don't deserve homes everyone absolutely  does but using a lot of these statistics is disengenious. People with severe mental illnesses having trouble staying homed does not equate to homes helping people's mental illnesses.  This talks about a lot of issues that cause homelessness like addiction, mental illness etc as if they are the result of the homelessness not the cause.

What really changed was when housing no longer became a commodity, but became an asset

And now you got people who act like both can’t exist there’s absolutely no reason tiny little homes tiny condos can’t exist and be affordable and those with the means to get better and bigger still can
