The takeaway I got from this is that dad seems to believe he is absolutely entitled to dictate how that young woman can and can't educate herself as an adult.

Essentially an arbiter of right or wrongthink. Basically whether or not she's going to need to expect to grow under the conditions of someone who just didn't have a parent at all depends on whether she's willing to give him unfettered control of her ability to make decisions.

In short, be the type of person he decides you should be, or he'll treat you exactly how he criticizes other people for treating their kids.

Even a study as dry as economics is apolitical. Physics, medicine, mathematics... all apolitical. Truth matters.

Now move to the softer studies - psychology, philosophy, theology, or any of the liberal arts... there is still truth to be discovered in those studies.

The problem with conservatives of a certain flavour is that they are resistant to truths and choose to ignore them in favour of their own dogma.

That's true on the extreme far left as well, but there is a heavy concentration of reluctance to challenge one's own world view within the American version of conservatism...
