I’m not minimizing this at all. I remember this same kind of thing with the skinhead movement in the ’80s; they never really went away. What’s different now is that 1) social media means we see far more of it than we ever would have before, and 2) some people who once kept these beliefs to themselves have been emboldened by certain political figures and movements and no longer feel the need to hide them. So there’s clearly greater visibility and openness. Unfortunately, this scum has always been on the pond; we just haven’t been able to see it as well.
