Is this an Asian thing or an immigrant thing?

In general, Asian culture is much more centered on acts of service than words of affirmation. MUCH more.

I dunno man. I’m a first gen Russian immigrant and a lawyer. When I graduated law school my mom didn’t come to my graduation because “it doesn’t really matter until you pass the bar.” When I passed the bar we didn’t celebrate, because “it doesn’t really matter until you land a good job.” When I got hired at an appellate clerkship (top 5% of the class can do that btw) my mom didn’t acknowledge it because “it doesn’t really matter until you are in big law making big money.” I’m in big law now and still no acknowledgment because “it doesn’t really matter until you make a partner.” Honestly, if I get a simple “That’ll do, ~~pig~~ daughter. That’ll do” before she passes, I will be very satisfied and will probably record it as proof that she ever said it.

My friend said when he did finally become a doctor his mom complained why it took so long, when her friend's children did it in less time.

A Korean man called me handsome once. I have never let that go. Neither has my wife.

It’s probably more a I love my family thing. I kept some of the cards my family gave me over the years aswell. Some of people that passed away over the years. Always puts a smile on my face reading their kind words :-))
