[Advice Needed] Master’s in Digital Media, 3 months to land a job in Germany. Which hard skill actually gets you hired?
TL;DR: I have a Master’s in Digital Media from a state uni in Germany, going to B2 German course. I have 3 months to find a job to keep my residence permit. I can take a further education. Should I go deep into one software (DaVinci/After Effects) or broad (Social Media Marketing/Content Creation)? Or any other recommendations?
Hey everyone,
I’m at a very critical junction and need some real-world advice.
Background: Master’s degree in Digital Media in Germany
Current Experience: Soft skills + Paid Media (mainly Google Ads)
German Level: Currently doing B2
Constraint: Must land a job related to Digital Media within 3 months to keep my residence permit. Open to relocating anywhere in Germany.
The Goal: Pick up a concrete hard skill, build a quick mini-portfolio, and get hired ASAP.
The Options (Weiterbildung via Agentur für Arbeit)
I need to choose the most pragmatic route:
- DaVinci Resolve (2 months, full-time)
- After Effects / Motion Design (with AI) (2 months, full-time)
- Advanced Video Editing (Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, After Effects)(3.5 months, full-time )
- Social Media Content Creation (2 months full-time with theoretical marketing infos as well)
My Questions for You
1. Depth vs. Breadth: For entry-level/junior roles in Germany, is it smarter to master one specific software (like DaVinci or AE) to do focused junior tasks, or go generalist (Social Media)?
2. Hiring Realities: Do German agencies or corporate media teams hire post-production/editor specialists who don't shoot/camera-op, or do they always expect a "one-man army" who shoots and edits?
3. Portfolio Feasibility: Which of these options gives a non-native speaker (B1-2 German) a realistic shot at building an interview-worthy portfolio in 3 months using stock or provided footage?
Appreciate any honest feedback, reality checks or personal experiences. Thanks!!!
