Does TikTok Promote tank your organic views after you pay for it?

The reason I’m asking is that I recently saw a TikTok influencer say that, after creators use the paid Promote feature, their organic videos may start receiving less distribution. The idea is that TikTok might recognize someone is willing to pay for reach and then make unpaid reach harder to get, encouraging them to keep using promotions.

I realize there’s no official TikTok policy saying this happens, and I’m not claiming it’s true based on one person’s experience. But do you guys have any information or experience about this?

ive seen this theory floating around a lot, and while tiktok would never admit it, it makes sense from their perspective, if they know you’ll open your wallet, why give you free reach

a friend who does decent numbers said her views dropped like a stone after a small promote test, the algorithm barely touched her next five videos, each one flatlined at a few hundred instead of the usual 5-10k

could be coincidence or just a bad stretch of content, but the timing was suspicious enough that she stopped promoting entirely

what she did instead was lean into trending sounds and reply to comments with video responses, that seemed to coax the algorithm back after a few weeks but who knows if it was damage control or just the usual randomness
