Every one of these is a terrible tragedy that someone endured, or didn’t.

Seeing someone get wrapped up in a lathe is not something you ever unsee.

I get sick watching this and remembering the way I'd literally feel for how smooth the aluminum coils were on the lathe I used to operate.

Our fingers were protected by gloves, but those gloves could have easily snagged and pulled us in.

One of those things were it happened over a decade ago but I'm still retroactively pissed at myself for taking the risk.

My (half) brother’s dad had a few of these combined happen to him. He works at a prominent and well known aluminum processing plant when one day, he was cleaning the machine. I’m not sure if he didn’t bother with lock-out, tag-out or if someone dismissed it/took it off while he was doing so. Anyway, they ended up turning the machine on and cutting three of his fingers off in varying places.

Working in manufacturing my whole life, there’s a plethora of guys (or even just “everyday people” complaining about “over-regulation”) that will bitch and moan over safety regulations and sometimes do something inherently dangerous. I usually say something about how if it hadn’t have happened to someone at one time, it wouldn’t be an issue. The number of people willing to put themselves (or others) in harms way to “save time” (ultimately, save the owner/shareholders pennies) is crazy. It isn’t like you’re going to be rewarded if everything goes right and have the most to lose when it goes incredibly wrong.
