You would think that you would want health care workers rested and mentally alert at all times. Nah, let's make them work 12 hours or longer because...reasons.

What is the medical industry always have these crazy long shifts? Why can't they be scheduled like a regular job?

I love my 12 hour shifts (ED nurse here). More time with patients = better continuity of care. Less errors due to shift handoffs. And yeah, I enjoy my four days off a week to rest and recover from what is a very high stress and emotionally taxing job. Without the self-care time I would probably leave my job.

These shifts should not exist. It's inhumane to both the nurses and the patients. When my great grandmother was a nurse (at the colored hospital) they had boarding homes across the street specifically for nurses where they even got meals. She worked 8 hour shifts and there were tons of nurses. We progress in some ways but regress in others, it's sad.

12 hour shifts should be illegal. Especially if you work in high stress environments like hospitals
