Youtube is doubling what it takes to get monetized, and theres a shorts rule in there most people skipped

youtube announced this in august and it kicks in february 1 2027. new channels will need 8,000 watch hours in the last 365 days, up from 4,000, or 20 million shorts views in the last 90 days, up from 10 million. the 1,000 subscriber bar stays. if youre already in the partner program youre grandfathered in, you just have to accept the new terms in studio by january 31 to keep earning on the affected features

thats the headline everyone ran. the line i almost missed is on youtubes own help page. to earn from the shorts creator pool each month, creators will need to maintain 10 million qualified shorts views over the last 90 days. the page doesnt spell out whether that part hits people already in the program the same way

10 million every 90 days is a lot for a shorts channel doing fine but not great. you could be monetized on paper and still get nothing from the shorts pool in a slow stretch

youtube says the point is to fund new incentive programs for creator growth. my read is the long tail of small shorts channels just got priced out of the pool and whatever was spread across them ends up with the top channels

anyone here in ypp mostly on shorts, are you clearing 10 million a quarter right now

from what i read the shorts floor does apply to existing partners too. 10M qualified views every rolling 90 days or your shorts pool share pauses. you don't get kicked out of ypp and long form keeps earning, and it switches back on automatically once you're over again

as a small channel the part that hits me is the entry bar. 8k hours feels a lot more reachable with long form than 20M shorts views, so i'm probably shifting more effort into longer videos before february

yeah the 10M/90d shorts floor is the real sleeper here, not the 8k hours. it basically rewards volume + cadence now

ive been using easyviral lately for moving scenes + auto-post to tiktok/ig/yt so i dont babysit uploads. mid channels are gonna feel this one tbh

I do not follow the monetizing rules of online platforms. Simple as that. I'm not under their thumbs on purpose. I am a free agent of the 'Verse.

Coaches are multiplying

Scrolling and reading people's bio on Linkedin, Facebook and some here Amazing how many "coaches", "life coaches", business coach, leadership coach, career coach, mindset coach, sales coach, branding coach, social media coach, health and wellness coach. Where did all these people get qualified to be a "coach"? Life experience? or sounded good on the Bio?

Why am I using 5 different tools to manage social media?

Maybe this is just me, but my social media workflow currently looks something like: ChatGPT → content ideas Canva → design Scheduler → publishing Analytics tool → reporting Inbox → replies Spreadsheet → planning And then I'm somehow supposed to call this an "efficient workflow"😂 I'm curious if anyone has actually found a social media management tool that brings more of this together. Especially now that Al tools are becoming more capable. Would you rather have one platform that can actually execute tasks, or do you prefer having separate best-in-class tools?

Why doesn’t Apple make a social media platform given all the major privacy concerns out of the popular platforms.

microsoft owns linkedin (imo that is social media). google owns youtube. maybe it is time for Apple to start a social media given the rise of Muse creating personal dossiers on all of its users (Meta - Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp). or even acquire one? I would love to use something other than tiktok, snapchat, instagram, youtube, or linkedin. apple?

I made 14 reels in 55 days and the editing got better with every one. Reel #1 got 1,482 views. Reel #14 got 50k+.

I started making reels in July about dev tools. I'm a software engineer, not an editor, so I put most of my effort into getting the editing right. Every reel went through several rounds of fixes: captions, zooms, sound, B-roll, music. My reels have now crossed 50k views, but for the first 55 days none of that editing work moved the numbers. After 14 reels I pulled the real numbers from Instagram insights and compared them with my edit history. The craft had clearly improved. The views hadn't moved at all. Reel #1 got 1,482 views, reel #14 got 1,295. Then I grouped the reels by topic and the pattern was obvious: "Get this paid thing for free" reels: median 1,482 views (3 reels, all 1,476 or more) Big brand plus some drama: median 1,211 (6 reels) "Here's a useful tool": median 522 (3 reels, none above 692) My own product: 429 (1 reel) The free and tool ranges didn't overlap at all. Same person, same editing, same face, and 3x the views depending on what the reel was about. The second thing that hurt was a 17-day break in the middle. The reel I came back with had my best engagement ever (people who saw it liked it) and only 185 views. Every other reel got between 400 and 1,900. What I took from it as a small account: topic and the hook headline decide reach before the edit even exists. Polish keeps the people who already see the reel, but it doesn't get the reel seen. And gaps are expensive. Small sample, I know. For people who've grown past this stage: did editing quality ever start to matter for you, or was it always topic and consistency?

What memes, TikTok trends, or viral topics are trending in California right now? Where do you usually go to keep up with what’s popular locally?

I work remotely from the Philippines and want to stay updated on what’s happening in California. What memes, TikTok trends, viral videos, or local topics are people talking about right now? Any subreddits, accounts, or pages you recommend following?
