A therapist is like any relationship , it’s important to find someone who is genuine and authentic and also is compatible with you. It took me many years to find a really effective therapist , none of my others were bad but there were varying degrees of how much they were willing to invest their concentration into getting to know me and my situation.

They are also humans trying to survive and thrive and they may not know their limit of how many people they can work with and serve , and the issue is depending on the type of practice they get paid on volume, especially for Medicare or other cheaper insurances.

Your friends and loved ones are not necessarily equipped to fully endure the emotional labor it takes to work through things. It’s an ebb and flow and takes consistency and a licensed therapist has trained in the accumulation of human expertise on the matter to be able to help you live a more fulfilling life. Saying a girlfriend or non professional is a good replacement is similar to asking your cousin who seen all of greys anatomy to give you medical advice. It might be right but more often than not it’s not as good as an expert.

Therapy when it works is legitimately life changing and helps you self actualize into a good person when it’s done well, but everyone’s journey is different and you don’t have to force therapy but don’t discount the entire profession and expertise and reduce to “someone to talk to”
