There's also something else that I think new Xiaohongshu users, especially those who can't read Chinese and don't understand Chinese internet slang terms. It's something I noticed recently on Xiaohongshu that made some of my Chinese friends upset.

Please understand that if you post your cat a lot on Xiaohongshu, whether as cat tax or if you just enjoy posting pics and videos of you cat, don't be surprise if you received Chinese comments along the lines of "想吸你的猫" (Xiǎng xī nǐ de māo) or basically just "吸猫" (xī māo).

If you press translation, there is a chance it'll translate that sentence to "want to suck your pussy" or "want to suck your cat" or "sucking pussy/cat".

I need everyone to know that THAT IS THE WRONG TRANSLATION and the Chinese commenters were not being disgusting with you.

吸 (xī) means to breathe in, to inhale, to absorb --> Google Translate just translate this simply as "suck"

猫 (māo) means CAT. THE ANIMAL, CAT.

吸猫 (xī māo) is a Chinese internet slang that means the act of grabbing your pet cat, pressing your cat's furry, fluffy body close to your face and deeply inhaling/breathing in its scent. It can also mean doing it aggressively... like you get a sudden attack of cute aggression upon seeing your cat. So you grab your pet cat, press your face onto its body and nuzzle, kiss and inhale its scent aggressively like you're out of breath and the scent of your cat is life-saving oxygen.

Like "sucking" in the scent of your pet cat <--- of all the possible translations, it's very likely your translation feature will fuck up and interpret 吸猫 (xī māo) as something vulgar using the word "suck" instead.

Some of my Chinese friends received hateful messages or comments from English speakers scolding them for commenting "想吸你的猫" (Xiǎng xī nǐ de māo) on cat posts because of the translation fuck up.

So please don't get angry if you come upon a 吸猫 (xī māo) comment. It is NOT a vulgar slang. It just means that the commenter finds your cat adorable and wants to press their face to your cat's fluffy body.

Also, some more slangs to add to the above:

  • DDDD means "those who will understand, will understand" so literally IYKYK.
  • PLGG means beautiful/pretty 哥哥 (gēgē), which means big brother. A term that's like the Korean "oppa" where depending on context, girls would call boys they admire/like 哥哥 (gēgē). So PLGG is like... something you'd comment on a hot guy's content. The very PG-13 version of "raw"
  • PLJJ is the female version of PLGG because it means beautiful/pretty 姐姐 (jiějiě), which means big sister. A term that's like the Korean "unni" or "nuna". The very PG-13 version of "raw" for a pretty girl.
  • BDJW means if you don't understand, just ask (me).

Please don’t teach people to use NB. Although many Chinese people will say it’s fine, that’s because it’s been widely used for a long time and has become normalized. We have lots of relatable examples in US language that have racist, sexist, or ableist origins yet people argue it’s fine to say it. The women of XHS recognize NB’s sexist origins and had almost entirely stopped its use in that app before we got there and men who weren’t even on XHS before made accounts to pander to Americans and started telling people to use it.

Making the Jump from TikTok to Rednote(Xiaohongshu)? Here’s What You Need to Know

So you’re thinking about switching (or at least dabbling) from TikTok to **Rednote** (aka Xiaohongshu)? Here’s a quick rundown on what to expect and how to adapt: 1. **Different Vibe** * **TikTok** is all about short, snappy videos—dances, trends, and memes. * **Rednote** leans more toward lifestyle tips, product reviews, and personal stories. Think mini-blogs rather than just quick clips. 2. **Less is More—or Is It?** * On **TikTok**, you can go viral with a 15-second masterpiece. * On **Rednote**, people actually read captions and appreciate detailed posts. Don’t be afraid to write a bit more and share personal insights. 3. **Engage with the Community** * Responding to comments is key on both platforms, but **Rednote** users expect a friendlier, more helpful approach. Focus on real interaction rather than just racking up views. 4. **Use Relevant Hashtags & Keywords** * **TikTok** hashtags can be trendy and fleeting. * **Rednote** hashtags and keywords should be more targeted, especially if you’re reviewing products or sharing how-to tips. 5. **Be Ready for Culture Shifts** * The **Rednote** audience often loves beauty, travel, fashion, and “real-life” hacks. * If you’re pivoting from dance challenges, consider experimenting with lifestyle or review content to fit the platform’s style. 6. **Quality Over Quantity** * While **TikTok** can reward frequent posting, **Rednote** might favor fewer, well-thought-out posts that really resonate. High-quality visuals and genuine storytelling go a long way. Got questions about Rednote? Drop ’em below—always happy to help a fellow content creator make the jump!

The ban isn't really about privacy concerns

Why exactly? You and me know why America is banning tiktok... They can't control the narrative their like they do with Facebook or Instagram YouTube. etc The genocide in Gaza was being shown in its full without any kind of censorship... And daddy israel doesn't like that so the AIPAC who's holding the American politicians by the balls... Forced them into banning the app.... It's not about privacy or any of that.... Remember edward Snowden.? I rest my case.

Y'all know why Trump suddenly became "pro-TikTok" right?

Say it with me....because he and his oligarch buddies are getting worried Americans are waking up to the truth about the anti-China propaganda BS in Red Note and will either demand better conditions or go full socialist.
