Did I Miss Something? Y

I just got a new iPhone and successfully transferred all the apps and settings without any problems… except TikTok. When all the things were done transferring, TikTok still had that little cloud arrow thing, when i pushed it to download, I got a note from Apple that said “TikTok isn’t available in your current location. Apple is required to follow all regulations and laws in all service areas”. Or something like that. Don’t remember exactly because the screenshot I took of the notification is now blank whereas before it had that disclaimer on it.

I was under the impression that it was just taken offline so “someone somewhere” could reset some algorithm and/or Meta or whatever the conspiracy is, which isn’t too far fetched, IMO. My feed went from funny MomTok and narcissistic awareness to… really basic, generic I don’t even remember type crap.

Anywho, what did I miss?

tiktok is not in the app stores anymore. the 75 day extension didn’t have any protection in place. meaning, the app is still technically banned. if someone buys it, then it will be back in the app stores

it hasn't been on the app store since the "ban" began. you can sideload it on android trivially but iphone users gotta do some gymnastics routine to trick apple into letting them install it. makes me wonder (again) why iphone users want to pay a premium to have a corporation tell them what apps they can have installed...

There’s no way to redownload the app via the US App Store and those of us who had it aren’t getting updates. Some people are also reporting OS updates bricking the current version of the app (which is normal; that’s part of why apps are constantly updating).

The 75 day extension did not provide sufficient legal cover for Apple and Google to not worry about enormous fines for having TikTok on the App Store. And the only way to really “save the app” at this point would be for Congress to draft new legislation undoing their previous TikTok ban.

Gonna miss CapCut.

So the tik tok ban isn’t just to shut down the app it’s basically to punish the app stores from having it to download. so they didn’t shut down the app but it is unavailable on the app store. i just got a new iphone too and had the same issue. what i did was download a vpn app and set it to canada. then change your app store location to canada and it will be able to download and even if you change your vpn and app store location back to the US it will stay downloaded

The app is still banned, idk why people though it was unbanned, the only reason we're still on the servers is because they told bytedance they wouldn't be fined for having the servers up and running , meaning you can't access it from the app store, you might be able to find a apk somewhere but I'm not sure if they work in iPhones

We only got a 90 ( maybe less?) day extension and if nobody buys into TikTok then it's going to be 100% gone in the USA

Tiktok is still banned with Trump giving Bytedance a 70-day, extension starting on January 20th, 2025 to sell 51% in which Bytedance put out a statement last week in the Washington post that they are not selling. Trump just passed it off to Vance a few days ago. Honestly it's just a mess

So I've been telling people for years to not use Apple products.

It's a wall garden, a completely closed system. You have a zero control.

At one point in time, the lawyers from Apple tried to argue and court. That whenever you buy an Apple product, you don't actually own it. You're just kind of leasing it.

That was done to prevent people from repairing their own stuff.

You could just download the app and sideload it. Meaning that you just install it without the Google Play Store and being involved.
