Aussie here, remember when TikTok was banned in the U.S for a bit? There was a trend going around that everyone was to put their flag in their names so we could branch out and embrace international cultures. It was #CommonwealthTikTok. I still have my flag displayed in my username as well. 🇦🇺
Basically everyone outside the U.S got the message and we proudly display our flags. We’re tired of U.S Defaultism and stops people from assuming everything we say and do relates to the U.S. It also made it easier to connect with other creators from either our own country or other countries.
The biggest reason was during that temp ban we were suddenly flooded with a very different (and pleasant) experience on TikTok. Seeing entirely different creators that we’d never seen before. People weren’t shouting at me anymore. I wasn’t seeing constant misinformation & fear mongering posts anymore. Not a single scrap of U.S politics or loud, annoying trends. The comments also changed almost instantly. All the ragebait comments had suddenly disappeared. There were no longer people arguing or being racist or hateful in the comments. It’s also a known fact that TikTok’s algorithm constantly shoves U.S content down our throats when we don’t want it.
When I say dollars you know I’m talking about AUD. When a Canadian says dollars you know they’re talking about CAD. It removes so much confusion when someone says “this country” or makes any reference to local issues.
I know some people who outright boycott any and all American content for various reasons, but that brief period when the U.S was banned from the app was genuinely a surreal experience. I won’t lie to you. TikTok was a very pleasant space during those 12 hours.
