What’s wrong with freedom of speech? Even if you don’t like what people say they still have a right to say it. As long as you aren’t going around harming people then I say you can dislike anyone you want for whatever reason. I don’t like people with no middle name.

Being afraid of a choice that someone else is making, that has no effect on your well being, while outwardly sharing your disdain in an attempt to unionize other people based on this ideal is threatening to the other individual for no reason. And to threaten another person for no reason other than your own fear is a significant theme of many historical cautionary tales. Those tales were shared throughout time as a testament to avoid the 'hive mind'.

In summary, being homophobic to yourself in private doesn't have an outward effect or seem to be morally 'wrong' but, creating a hostile environment for others due to your choice of expressing fear and disdain for others is out of touch for our modern society and creates a network of hurt.

To provide a comparison, I am scared of the modern depiction of Jesus that Christians put in their homes. When I learn that a neighbor or colleague has this image of Jesus in their home, I can be afraid to myself, by myself but, if I start sharing that insight with others they may get swept up in our shared fear and try to remove and harm those who have these images of Jesus. The act of sharing my fear and disdain is when, in theory, my fear becomes morally wrong.
