consumerism on tiktok

Perhaps I am old (I’m 32 🫣) but I’ve used TikTok for a couple of years now and I really enjoy it - obviously there are bad sides to it!

Recently though, all I see is videos of creators selling absolute trash to their followers. I saw one earlier where a guy was saying his mrs always smells and he wants a divorce and he’s told her to take some tablets which he showed in the video. The video was just dumb.

There was another guy, Ryan who I believe is popular for all the wrong reasons wearing women’s gym leggings saying how much he loves them.

Have I missed something? Why is all this cheap stuff being sold all of a sudden? Every scroll is almost a “commission paid” post now. I even saw my friends mum selling collagen powder on there…

Everytime someone says “I brought this off TikTok shop” I cringe.

Perhaps I am old.

you are not old in the big picture, but unfortunately (or luckily), you are too old for tik tok.

Not old, just seeing the new gross reality. Tiktok is no longer a social media app, its used to simply make money or to watch people struggle to try to make money. Everyone sees creators making a lot, so now they all wanna do it too. Plus, we are still in that stupid ban so who knows what its gonna look like in a month.

But im with you...I scroll so fast all the time. Im not on there to fucking shop for garbage so I dont even give them the views.
