How accurate is the follow list on a private account?

I’ve realised that on the desktop version, you can see someone’s follow count even if there’s is a private account, obviously not who they follow or who’s following them, but it gives a number for each. Does anyone if this is accurate? I did check for myself between a couple of my accounts and it seems to reflect in real time.
