Why do “”upscaled”” videos on TikTok look so weird?

These are only two examples but there are so many TikToks that I find where they upscale stuff (even from 2010) that look terrible. So much detailed is lost and it looks uncanny. Does anyone know why or how they do this? It irritates me and I want to know if anyone else finds these weird.

There are a few different programs but I generally use Topaz video ai.

The issue comes from a few things. Mainly, human faces are hard to accurately upscale in ways that maintain the original. But also when the original has a low resolution, the ai has to guess a whole lot more as to what to add to the upscaled resolution. The last thing could be because of added sharpening and other things on top of the upscale.

The other option is to enlarge it and make it look pixelated or leave it tiny in the frame in its original resolution. It’s kind of a lose lose, to answer your question.
