Videos not performing to nearly identical ones posted by others

I recently(ish) started trying to post some edit content to TikTok but the results having been nothing but disappointing. I often spend hours not only compiling clips to use but putting together and editing the videos, which usually only result in a couple thousand views and a couple hundred likes on average. My one video that did better than the average is in the thousands of likes and was one of my earliest posts and under-edited.

My most recent vid was a few days ago and totaled to around 250 likes, just for someone to post a less edited version to the same sound a few hours later that's now sitting on 50k likes. Is the algorithm not favoring me? Am I over-editing? Or am I missing something that really pushes people to watch videos and into the fyp?
