TikTok DM request status changed?

I sent someone a DM request a while ago. At first, I couldn’t send another message unless they accepted it. Now that restriction is gone and I can send messages again, but there is no “Message request accepted” message in the chat. We don’t follow each other. Does anyone know what could cause this?

that happened to me once, some update or glitch probably reset the request status even if they didn't accept it yet. they might still not see your messages if their privacy settings block dms from non-followers but tik tok won't always show you that anymore
