The Social Reckoning is an important film that you should see in theaters or later online

Do people involved in using social media in a professional capacity need to be concerned about it’s downsides? If they have concerns, what if anything can they do about them?

I don’t have the answers to these questions, but I know that an important first step is to be informed and making sure to see a film like this is really the bare minimum of what you can do to be informed.

The social reckoning has received a lot of mixed reviews from critics while receiving a slightly better response from audiences and is not doing great financially with ticket sales.

Its actually an excellent movie and an important one.

Its just not what general audiences want to spend their time seeing in a movie theater at this point in time for many reasons.

We are in the midst of a historically fraught period with the threats of AI, mass surveillance, the Iran conflict, continued environmental collapse, unprecedented wealth inequality, a hyper polarized electorate wirh upcoming elections, and an economy teetering on the brink and this film is neither about any of those topics or an escapist fantasy to help people who want to not think about them.

(Even though its not about these specific upcoming elections it still relevant to them)

And many people are already aware of the issues with facebook and social media that this film portrays, even if not all the details that this film gives.

The film goes into a lot of detail about how Zuckerberg and the people at Facebook intentionally chose to have their algorithm push more divisive, toxic, fearful, rage bait, and false content in order to drive up engagement or peoples use of the platform.

Facebook has been instrumental in helping to spread a lot of misinformation and disinformation and in polarizing American voters and the people at Facebook knew their platform was having those effects.

I’ve seen the toxic effects of the platform myself on various friends and family members.

The film also touches briefly on the fact that Facebook knew Instagram was destroying teens mental health, but tried to hide that fact.

I saw the film myself by sailing the high seas.

While I very much wanted to see the film, I expected it to be a little bleak and depressing and that’s not the movie theater going experience I wanna have right now and I think that there are a lot of people like me who wish to see the film, but don’t necessarily want to go sit in a movie theater and watch it.

None of this is to say that the film doesn’t have any issues at all, but I think that a lot of the negative reactions from both critics and general audiences stems from the fact that this film at this point in time is more bad news on top of a pile of already bad news, and bad news that many people have already been aware for a while now, and have felt powerless to do anything about.

Compare that to the first film, the social network, which was a story about the rise of Facebook during a time when it was still somewhat new and fascinating to people; during a time before people knew how toxic it was going to become. A story that interested many people and that most didn’t already know.

You also have to consider the likelihood that Facebook or Meta is actively campaigning against the film online and especially on social media.

You just have to read up on how they viciously went after that former executive, Sarah Williams, when she wrote the tell all book “Careless People” about the serious problems with Zuckerberg and the rest of Facebook’s leadership to know what they are willing to do to combat negative press.

I think the film will do very well on streaming.

the algorithm stuff they lay out is the part that still gets me, even knowing the broad strokes beforehand. watching it laid out step by step like that makes the deliberate malice hard to ignore

also yeah the timing is a mess for a theater run. people are tapped out and this isn't exactly a popcorn flick. the sarah williams book you mentioned is sitting on my nightstand, been meaning to get to it

These are extremely concerning things. I need to see this movie for sure. We (and others) are working on alternatives, but it's an uphill battle with the way that Facebook, X, etc. are so entrenched in the lives of so many people.

Just been hit by Meta One link limit!

I run social media for a charity here in the UK, and we regularly post content linking to parts of our website, event links for other organisations etc from our Facebook page. As of today (it didn't show up yesterday) we can only post 2 links a month without paying a fortune?! How is everyone getting round this or are we all needing to just fork out?

Do you ever feel like you're creating content for the algorithm instead of actual people?

I've been managing social media for a while now and now it feels like every platform wants something completely different. One week it's short videos then it's carousels then someone says posting less gets better reach every time I think I've figured something out it feels like the rules change again. The other night I was scrolling on my phone looking at accounts in my niche and I noticed the posts I actually stopped to read weren't the ones that looked the most polished they were the ones that felt like someone was sharing a real opinion or experience instead of trying to game the algorithm. It made me wonder if I've been spending too much time chasing what I think the platform wants instead of making content that people would care about even if there wasn't an algorithm involved. Has anyone else started shifting back toward that mindset or is it just me?

Will the social media influencer era will be dead after the new ai influencers wave?

I’ve been thinking that many people aspire to become influencers and gain recognition on social media platforms by creating content. However, with the rise of AI influencers, it will become increasingly challenging to compete with them across various domains, including travel, fashion, and information dissemination. Do you see this too?

One creator account or two separate ones?

I’ve built a fairly large audience through aesthetic lifestyle content like cozy home videos, cooking, cute drinks, cafés, and daily vlogs. However, I also love makeup, beauty, fashion, and modeling, and I want to become known personally rather than just for my aesthetic content. I created a separate account for my face, beauty, and fashion, but now I’m unsure whether to keep both accounts or combine everything. I’m worried that mixing cozy lifestyle content with makeup videos, fashion, and more personal content might make my main account feel inconsistent. I also don’t want to lose the audience and identity I’ve worked hard to build, but I also don’t want to limit myself creatively The content overlaps a lot, too. Where would things like daily vlogs, beauty treatments, shopping, and café visits go? Those clips are of me and related to beauty, but they’re also my life and lifestyle i also had thoughts like, if someone asks for my social media, which one do I give out? Which one is me? Which is my main account? I’ve been going back and forth on this for so long that I genuinely don’t know what makes the most sense anymore it’s stressing me out😭 i really appreciate any ideas and opinions!

Is there an app or website that builds a social media strategy and generates content based on your answers to a few questions?

Hey everyone! I’m looking for a tool (app or website) where you can input information about your business, niche, or goals by answering a series of questions, and it automatically creates a full social media strategy and generates ready-to-use content based on those answers. Ideally, something that helps with planning and content creation without needing to prompt everything manually from scratch. Does anyone know of a tool like this? Recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
