New player on Controller

Coming over from Diablo. Im excited because it seems like there’s so much depth in the builds. I admit, I’m really struggling in act 1 and I find the game to be very difficult.

Wondering if anyone can suggest a build that is easy to understand and progress through the game. I know there is a large amount of things to do in the end game but for now I want to take my time, learn about all the systems, currencies, build paths and get to end game content eventually.

I’ve got kids so my time is limited to a few hours a day and when I do I like to lounge with a controller in my hand a build that is easy to use for controller would be a huge bonus.

Anyway, please let me know your thoughts. I’ll be starting on the current Vaal. (Is there a point in doing any that isn’t the current one?). Oh, I also should mention that I have stash tabs etc.

I’m in the same situation so any help would definitely be appreciated

I have started off as a monk and trying to understand builds I’m just lost lol 😂

I’m also a big Diablo fan and struggled a lot with PoE until I used a build guide. I used this lightning arrow one from fubgun and I liked how it laid it out by level for the beginning.

If you're trying to learn and want to take your time, I'd really suggest just trying to make up your own build as you go along.

The passive tree and other systems become a lot less intimidating when you actually start to interact with them yourself.

All that said, Monk is a really fun class that plays well on controller.

Some of the easier builds that scale well through campaign are ranger and sorceress. A lot of people will use lightning arrow or spark.

Highly recommend at least reading through a build guide, don’t have to use it, to understand how you build out characters. It’ll also give you an idea of which qualities on which items are most valuable to your character.

I played an entangle sorceress (disciple of varashta) and it scaled super well.

Find the biggest thing on a controller is to have no more than 3-4 skills that are necessary for the build to work, otherwise the controller gets clunky.

I love warrior shield and mace for starting you and it plays well on controller

So - just some easy stuff that isn't readily apparent from just starting without reading guides.

First - super important to get new gear often in the beginning. Armor, no matter the character (if a spell caster or whatever) is very useful in Act1. Energy Shield is also good, but not as good as armor. Evasion will seem pretty lame in the first few acts. For beginners, it's easiest to just choose armor until you can't because of gear requirements later. Checking every new level for what's at the store is good once you get some gold to spend is great.

Second - Upgrade your skills continually. Higher and higher level skill gems will drop. You'll always want to upgrade the skills you have and are using. And dump the ones you aren't anymore (pull them out of your slotted skills. Also - as long as you can afford it stat wise, use support gems to bolster your skills.

Third - since you're probably playing standard and not Hardcore as a new player - damage passives are more important in the beginning. You'd rather out damage enimies before they have a chance to do much damage, and bosses have giant lifebars. You can come later in the passive tree to pick up some defense stuff.

The only things I've found that don't play well on controller are skills with round aoes that target an enemy like grenades, or that benefit from precise positioning. Surprisingly, projectile builds like bow, crossbow, glacial lance, or ember fusillade played awesome on the controller. They become full auto-target and it feels really good! Crossbow was my overall best experience on PS5.

I would suggest warrior. Start with rolling slam and boneshatter, till you can take shield wall. I would suggest experimenting and looking at support gems to figure out how to make shield wall into a main skill.

If some mechanic doesn't make sense look it up here: https://www.poe2wiki.net/wiki/Path_of_Exile_2_Wiki

If you want ideas on how to gear use, poe ninja's HC SSF builds to look up how other players built their character:

https://poe.ninja/poe2/builds/vaalhcssf

If you just want an exact guide to the shield wall build:

https://maxroll.gg/poe2/build-guides/shield-wall-warbringer-build-guide

Especially on controller, warrior will force you to learn mechanics. After learning warrior pretty much every class is simple (from a mechanical/execution stand point). Shield wall also doesn't require expensive gear, so less need to grind. It's pretty tanky, so you are less likely to die.

I don't recommend range class at first. Especially Fubgun's Lightning Arrow build. You won't learn any mechanics. You'll also be disappointed with every other build. Fubgun's build will teach you a bunch of bad habits.

Used Amazon bleed build from maxroll as a starting point. Customising it this season, but similar to last. Easy clear, has good defences, mobile. In D4 I played everything and the bleed build was simple enough to get my head around

PS5 player here... really anything works. I enjoyed crossbow builds and mapped my buttons to be similar to my helldivers layout. Lightning arrow builds are good. Contagion Lich will probably be the easiest for a new player. After 2 ascendancy trials, you're basically invincible until late game. Melt everything.

I decided to try stacking energy shield - at minimum level.

I got bored at this stage in the league and decided to spend many of my hard earned divines on a small project. Wouldn't it be funny to stack Energy shield for a min-level char? [https://poe.ninja/poe2/pob/1a027](https://poe.ninja/poe2/pob/1a027) Tabula rasa has relevant jewel mods noted on it in POB so the math actually works out since it doesn't seem to work properly in POB. second screenshot is with a lvl 29 discipline aura with 36% increased aura magnitude - I didn't wanna spend another several thousand divines on a support character, I just wanted to see how well it would work theoretically >3000 ES without aurabot is possible, however, its basically impossible in practice. As of now, there are \*18\* 2 socket uncorrupted crown of thorns left on trade - on average it takes \~11 to hit a 30% and then another 1 in 3 to get a 3 socket one. Hitting a double corrupt on said 3 socket would be better then my current one, but that's not plausible sadly. Same for the boots. Hitting a better double corrupt on the gloves and focus would likely be plausible, but I couldn't buy more bases from Finn. Grip of Kulemak 59% ES \*should\* be possible, but it already took me over 40 attempts to hit 57% so I think I'll just leave it as is. Belt I didn't find any other way besides the 25% corrupt to get ES without a level requirement - if anyone has any idea tell me. Amulet could sanctify for 19/19 but again, would require silly amounts of currency (each try is \~30 div as is with annoint + sanctify + quality). I \*think\* patient barrier should be best annoint, but correct me if I'm wrong. Total investment into this character so far is about 3000 divines, probably a bit more. further thoughts \- maximum technically possible is 3112 ES at level 2 unless I'm missing something important. POB [https://poe.ninja/poe2/pob/1a02a](https://poe.ninja/poe2/pob/1a02a) \- doubting this but: is it possible to get an ascendency at this low level by skipping straight to geonor with a helper? In which case it might be possible that xp penalties kicking it would allow me to ascend at lvl 2? This would allow +20% +20% (ascendency) +60% (jewel) ES, which would get me to 3218 ES (actual build) / 3732 ES (max technically possible) Did I miss anything?

Rakiata who?

Rakiata who?

I made an elemental crossbow varashta sorc this season as my starting build (goal was to exploit yoke of suffering's full potential, you can find poe ninja below, don't be fooled by the dmg tooltip, it kill ubers before they can move) and so since I was in the intel side of the tree I used my weapon swap to maximize exposure (with whispering ice) and curse magnitude. Here with some non-optimized gear I'm reaching a total of -338% res (that's -169% on bosses), meaning it's better than rakiata's. I use cursed ground support to apply the curse and icestorm (which comes with the staff) with prolonged duration and potent exposure to make the exposure last longer. This tech doesn't require much investment apart from your weapon swap and a few sockets at most so it can be plugged into many elemental builds. As it is now, it requires you to cast the spells with your weapon swap, so I use it mostly for bosses, but i might cast icestorm on bulky rares in juiced maps once in a while. If you have a skill dedicated for mapping, it'll propably better to use rakiata on it, and remove it or use another skill for bosses. Here's the poeninja: [https://poe.ninja/poe2/profile/McZaatar-0907/character/Dendjala](https://poe.ninja/poe2/profile/McZaatar-0907/character/Dendjala) I might make a build showcase if people are interested, it's a fun league starter build. With yoke and the electrocution node on the tree, enemies have 120% damage taken, more if they're cursed, on top of the giant res drop, plus you benefit from a lot of the "damage against enemies with ailments nodes" so that's why the tooltip is low (explosive grenades indicate 60k in game but they hit bosses for like 2M) at first I was playing with permafrost bolt with frost nexus + navira's fracture + fragmentation rounds, it was a fun combo and really strong for leveling but I couldn't scale navira's fracture damage in late game (I had command + minion nodes on my second weapon instead of the curse/exposure at the time) Hope this inspires some of you!
