The servers might be slowly splitting.

Found out they likely made a new server for international users.

In the Xiaohongshu User Privacy Policy:

In this Policy, "Xiaohongshu" refers to a product distinct from its overseas-operated version, "rednote". Users of Xiaohongshu and rednote are distinguished by their mobile phone numbers. This Policy applies to Xiaohongshu users, specifically:

Users who have registered with a mobile phone number from Chinese Mainland; and

Users who have already registered as Xiaohongshu users using a mobile phone number outside Chinese Mainland before December 8th, 2025.

After December 8th, if you register with a mobile phone number outside Chinese Mainland, you will be a rednote user and the rednote Privacy Policy shall apply.

In the rednote Privacy Policy:

Specifically, Xiaohongshu App operating in China will be interoperable with rednote Platform; this means that public User Content and profile can be shared and accessed by a user of Xiaohongshu platform, and you can communicate, interact with a user of the Xiaohongshu platform.

TLDR: They're putting new foreign users after 12/8/2025 in a new Singapore-based server instead of China server. The new server is interoperable with China's server.

EDIT: Rednote (Intl) and XHS (China) have different ToS.

EDIT #2 (3/8/2026): changed TLDR because it might be more then just user data.

"we are gonna still be able to see the Chinese content, but primarily, we are gonna be interacting with each other" - FakeCEORealGF video

"interacting with each other" possibly meant servers interacting with each other

That's how Wechat/Weixin has always operated (and also used phone number as a differentiator). WeChat is a Singapore company. Weixin is part of Tencent which is a domestic China mainland company. Any chats between the two are presumably stored on both servers and thus can be accessed by either side's law.

They are probably trying to preempt a TikTok-style claim that they are "sending users data to China" or whatever.

Immediately loses their entire international userbase INSTANTLY if they made it non interchangeable, but this is pretty good

Luckily I joined before this happened, kinda unsurprising considering the Chinese government already kept their internet very isolated

for a while now (months) if i check my posts city distribution it’s distribution ( says abroad) like 90% and 1-2% china. Ā The only way people will see you is if you interact/ comment with content they provide and someone stops by your profile. i don’t care, i still like the app. still making friends. i won’t complain  … there’s no go* damn ads bombarding you like here in the US šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™€ļøšŸ˜‚ i signed up over a year ago. and i noticed this change.Ā

I'm missing something. Maybe the legalese is too much for me but I don't see where they say we're be using different ones

even if this is the case i don’t feel isolated from Chinese users. šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

People foresaw this coming since January last year, but people did not believe it since RedNote seemed welcoming.

But if anybody knows China history well, it was only a matter of time before they changed their minds and separate the servers to protect users inside the mainland.

casscainisbatman•8 months ago•1

wait so is this a bad thing??? they're not isolating the content right (like blocking users from seeing each other)???

As a Xiaohongshu creator in China, I do think the platform genuinely wants to go global and bring in creators who are already established on TikTok and Instagram.

I’m just not sure how successful that will be. Even with translation, the cultural gap is still pretty big. Content style, humor, community norms, and even what people consider worth sharing are quite different. So international expansion makes sense, but making the ecosystem actually blend well is much harder.

Red note

Isnt is kinda beautiful to see how Americans and the Chinese are getting along. It’s the most connected we’ve ever been with each other and most users are accepting us. Granted, we will have to limit brain rot and post high quality content, but it’s nice to a lot of us getting along

I didn't even use tiktok, and this app is awesome and has a great community,Coming from YouTube shorts.

Chinese and Americans have never been closer to each other until now. This app is really wholesome tbh and the fact its free of brainrot too

The living standards of Chinese people presented on Xiaohongshu are exaggerated (This is not a question, but it's very helpful for TTrefugees to understand this Chinese app)

I'm Chinese. The lives of Chinese people are not as good as shown on Xiaohongshu If you are a blogger on Xiaohongshu, and you interview ordinary people in ordinary counties about their daily lives and daily expenses, your videos will be banned soon because ordinary people live in poverty (even China's former Premier Li Keqiang said that 600 million people in China earn less than 1000 yuan per month), and showing these poor lives to the public is not allowed in China because it will deepen people's doubts about the effectiveness of the Communist Party's economic policies. When Xiaohongshu first became popular in China (I don’t mean when Xiaohongshu was first established), it was an app about female consumption and entertainment, and as a result, a serious comparison culture was formed on this app. This culture led to a phenomenon called ā€œrefined povertyā€, which means that young people with limited incomes spend a lot of money (even borrowing high-interest loans) on some items and services that can show off their wealth on social media, while being very tight on other aspects of life. Therefore, generally speaking, the content about Chinese people's lives that you can see on Xiaohongshu is posted by middle-class people living in big cities and people who are poisoned by the culture of "refined poverty". Ordinary people are too embarrassed to post their ordinary lives on it. Even if they do, if they post too much, their posts will be deleted or their accounts will be blocked. So, I can say that the content about life you can see on Xiaohongshu is exaggerated. The content on Xiaohongshu cannot reflect the real living standards of Chinese people.

indefinite restriction, denied passport verification…

i’m australian born chinese. some of my interests are really niche globally, but has lots of fanartists in china. i’m friends with them on global platforms like xwitter, but they post much more here and also it’s more lively.. i’d really love to see their works (guess i still can, i just can’t share anymore.) so far the changes in my account that i noticed is a fully resetted profile name, pictures, bio. people won’t see my profile and posts, and i can’t make new posts or comment. they’ve restricted the feature to delete this account and make a new one..? it doesn’t bother me cuz i just started, but i’m still a little sad. ive tried the automated appeal with my passport. i dont care if they get my information but when i tried to give my details, it needed me to NFC scan my passport. the facial recognition failed many times since my lighting was too bright. after the 7th try they got it, but said my phone is ā€œunsafeā€, therefore it’s not valid. is there just no way around it… ive said absolutely nothing to no one, i like art posts and finally decided to post my own drawings (with my desc text in chinese). did i post too many within 30 minutes??? whatd i even do so far bilibili has been the most kind app to me, taobao has also banned me at one point should i pack it up and leave

Help with package returned

I had a package from xiaohongshu shipped to the Cainiao warehouse, but they rejected my package with a message that said it will be returned to the seller via the original route. I was told that when a package is rejected by Cainiao, it will be returned to the sender via the same tracking number. I’m trying to fill out the Return Details on xiaohongshu, but it’s not letting me enter the same tracking number. So what should I do??

Chiboki consolidated shipping

Is there any way to get around the consolidated shipping and just pay the shipping up front, or is that not an option within red-note? I’m worried about how much the shipping will be because I want to order 13 squishes and would wanna know the price before I end up purchasing them
