The Dark Side of Social Media: The Manosphere

I've just watched this docu 'Louis Theroux: Inside the Manosphere' on Netflix that dived into a truly dark corner of the internet a.k.a the manosphere. It is honestly shocking to see how social media has let men with deeply misogynistic, oppressive views build such massive platforms.

Plus, a lot of these creators have audiences made up of minors. Do we need stricter age restrictions on social media to protect younger users? This is genuinely corruption.

How might this affect the next generation of men? And more importantly, how do we push back against it?

Australia recently banned social media for children under 16, so we'll see how that works out for them. Other governments may follow suit, I think Indonesia is planning a similar ban at the moment.

Apart from government regulation parents also need to step up and be more active and aware of their kids' social media usage. Shoving an iPad in a foam case in your child's face to keep them quiet and occupied for hours I believe is a form of child abuse.

yeah, it’s pretty wild how these platforms let those views spread so easily, especially to younger audiences. i think stricter age restrictions could help, but it’s also about educating kids on this stuff. i mean, i’ve seen some guys get into this manosphere stuff and it just seems like a toxic spiral.

Viral Misinformation: Sensationalist, misleading, and false content ("fake news") often generates more engagement, and therefore spreads faster, than accurate . Echo chambers can be breeding grounds for extremist ideologies, as individuals are repeatedly exposed to increasingly radical views without opposing perspectives.

Even if you don't take into account the harm of things like the Manosphere, social media is inherently harmful in its current form.

The people who built the algorithm literally studied how to create the same neurological symptoms that addicts experience.

In addition to that, it also actively harms your attention span and cognitive abilities.

And in addition to that, being bombarded with so much information all the time (whether positive or negative) is not something our minds were meant for either.

If you listen to interviews with heads of these silicon valley companies, they send their children to specific schools that do not allow technology, and they do not allow their children to use tablets, smartphones, etc until age 16 at least. And when you look at studies, those students have higher cognition and perform better than students at other private schools that do allow tech in the school/classrooms.

We've still not put enough regulation on the internet as it was pre-social media to combat the harmful parts of it, so we are way behind with Social Media, and now with AI.

Social media in of itself is not necessarily a bad thing, but the way it is used and structured right now, (as a machine to make as much money as possible) is absolutely dangerous and toxic.

Most men and women get along fine in real life, the internet just makes it look like a war.

What is engagement on LinkedIn?

Everyone talks about "boosting engagement" but nobody actually breaks down what that means practically. Likes, comments, shares, clicks they all count differently and yet most people treat them the same. From what I have seen comments carry the most weight both for the algorithm and for actual human memory. When someone leaves a genuinely thoughtful comment I remember their name way longer than whoever wrote the original post. Is that just me or does anyone else experience linkedIn that way?

Does TikTok distribute videos based on where you are located?

I recently started a TikTok account where I share my experience living abroad in my native language. I expected my videos to reach people in my home country who are curious about what life is like here. But most of the people watching and commenting seem to be people from my same country who already live here too. They comment things like “I felt the same when I moved here.” It feels like TikTok is mainly showing my videos to people in the country where I currently live rather than people back home. Does TikTok prioritize showing videos based on the creator’s location at first? Or will the algorithm eventually reach people in other countries who speak the language?
