This was a huge corporate mistake by company's American PR and marketing team. which even went against the creator's story of kitty . The company sanrio actually walked this whole thing back and corrected it. Because of this disaster, and the fact Sanrio said their own American marketing team didnt even know HOW to describe Kitty and became a massive liability disaster (leave it to americans lol). The company adjusted thier character rulebook with locked down guidlines and manitory scripting.

From Sanrio: spokesperson explicitly stated, "It's going too far to say that Hello Kitty is not a cat. Hello Kitty is a personification of a cat." Hello Kitty is a gijinka (a personification  of a cat but goes through life like a little girl).

The creator of Hello Kitty Yuko Shimizu openly stated to the BBC that her original 1974 sketch was literally a "white cat with a red bow in its hair," inspired by a real white kitten her father gave her for birthday as a child. She created Hello Kitty's backstory modeled afte Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking-Glass protagonists pet cat.
