Don't bother trying to figure out China's censorship system. Even people who've been using the Chinese internet for years can't fully understand its rules—because there are no clear rules to begin with. As we Chinese say, "The law must remain unknowable, so its power remains unfathomable." The lack of clear guidelines is intentional, as it forces people to self-censor.

That's a simplified view typical of Americans who are used to complicated subjects being dumbed down for them. There's nothing that "collectivist" about East Asians. Rather, Americans are generally far more narcissistic and self-serving so anything that's not "me me me" and "I am a special snowflake" may come off as "collectivist".

Also, the censorship you encountered has nothing to do with this and has everything about controlling the narrative. The CCP does not like insurrectionist movements. You will not find this type of censorship in Korea, Japan, or Taiwan.

To be fare, if you talk about politics in r/lifestyle or r/foodhacks , you'd probably be banned too.

That's honestly why I'm sticking around and I'm glad they're doing what's best for their platform.

Look, I've been to China a few times, and the government is serious things like that. I remember being in Shanghai once. I was in my hotel room. CNN was on, and it was the anniversary of Tiananmen Square. I was getting ready and then suddenly the TV broadcast stopped. At first, I was like, "Did the power go out?" But no, the lights were on and everything else was fine. I remembered where I was, and that was that.

It’s so funny I keep seeing people say this when the app is literally named “little red book” a book written by Mao.

It’s fine to have political posts as long as it’s pro-China or anti-American
