Why do celebrities and creators prefer using Twitter and/or Discord to talk to fans over Reddit?

It's something I noticed from celebrities and creators (like directors, writers, showrunners, cartoon creators, indies) that if they want to connect to their fans, be that a tweet or even communicating with them, they always either use Twitter or Discord.

Why is that? Why don't they use Reddit to communicate with their fans. It seems that Reddit has better structure and more potential to talk to fans

Because reddit is still more forum based and threaded conversation whereas twitter and discord have more free flowing informal style about them, plus for managing a community, from experience it was easier to find my people more on my discord and twitter than on reddit, sometimes maybe just their preference plus its less restricted in what you can say or do on those apps compared to reddit auto mod catching anything it may deem as wrong

reddit threads are good for discussion but weak for a one-to-many update, the post sinks in a feed full of strangers. twitter and discord put the creator's own followers right under the announcement, so it reaches the people who already care. discord also gives a place to talk back, which reddit's comment tree makes awkward

Reddit is great to talk about a broad variety of things that interest you, but Discord is vastly superior if you want to talk about different elements of the same niche interest.

For example, let's say you're into a certain celebrity. Reddit will have a few subs for them, whereas a Discord channel dedicated to them will have sub-channels for:

  • Appearances
  • Latest projects
  • What they are wearing
  • Memorabilia
  • Rumours/news etc etc etc.

One of my personal interests is sports cards, and Discord is way better than reddit because everything is contained under the one roof.

  • Buy/sell
  • Hobby news & announcements
  • Dedicated channels for each sport
  • IRL news
  • Flips
  • Deals/sales
  • Grading
  • Box openings
  • Fantasy etc etc etc.

This is too much of a mess on reddit.

nobody needs to follow you anymore, and thats why your reels get views and no follows

everyone is asking why the views are fine and the follows are dead, and i think the answer is boring and structural, not the algorithm punishing anyone. think about why you used to follow an account. you followed so you would see their stuff again. that was the entire deal. now the feed serves you whatever it wants either way, and if that person makes another good video you will probably get shown it regardless. so following costs the viewer a slightly messier feed and gives them almost nothing back. the trade stopped making sense. which means "follow for more" is asking people to pay for something they already get for free. no wonder it quietly stopped working. the follows that still happen look different to me. people follow when they want to find you again on purpose. not to receive you, to locate you. thats a completely different job and it needs a different reason. a series where they want the next part. a name for the thing you do. something on the profile that signals there is more of this and its organised, not just one good video and then vibes. heres the part im not certain about and would like people to push back on. if this is right, two accounts making equally good videos should convert views into follows at wildly different rates depending on whether theres a recognisable recurring thing on the profile, and hook quality should barely matter for the follow specifically. it obviously still matters for the view. so if you run a series or a named format, does your follow rate look different from your one off posts? id like to know if this holds up or if im talking nonsense.

Followers don't automatically turn into sales, and I think the gap is usually on the website

Something I keep noticing with small brands: the Instagram or TikTok account feels alive. Real customers in the comments, try-on videos, people tagging the brand. Then you click through to the store and it's studio shots on a white background and nothing else. Everything that made you trust the brand stayed behind on the app. A few reasons I think followers convert worse than people expect: - The trust built on social doesn't travel with the click. People land on a product page that feels like a colder, different brand. - Most followers are there for the content, not to shop right now. A follow is closer to "I like this" than "I'll buy this." - The path from a post to the product is clumsy: link in bio, then the homepage, then searching for the thing they saw. - The proof people look for, real people actually wearing or using the product, lives on social and not where the buying decision happens. What seems to help is keeping some of that real content in front of people at the moment they're deciding, and making the jump from a post to the exact product as short as possible. Curious how others handle it. If you run social for a brand that sells online, do you bring your social content onto the website, or treat social purely as an awareness channel?
